According to UWire.com, which is compiling Presidential Endorsements made by the editorial boards of student newspapers' across the county, Sen. Obama has had a total of 94 endorsements, while Sen. John McCain has only two. Uwire.com is a website that compiles the work of young journalists and helps in career networking.
Among the 94 endorsements for Obama are papers ranging from Amherst College, the Stony Brook Statesman to Yale University.
The only two papers endorsing McCain are the Daily Mississippian, from the University of Mississippi, and the Mesa State Criterion, from Mesa State College.
Although the majority of editorial boards have backed Obama, not all young people feel the same way.
Nathan Gugliotta, a freshman at Wright State, a public university located in Dayton, Ohio, is the creator and administrator of a Facebook group titled “Students for John McCain.”
“I could never see myself being persuaded by other people's opinions on a matter,” Gugliotta said via Facebook. “I'm sure some people would be swayed by a newspaper endorsement, while others probably would not. I think that, if somebody is only voting based on what a newspaper says, that person has no business voting at all.”
Even though the Diamondback, the student run newspaper at the University of Maryland has not endorsed a candidate, Jake Cigna, a senior and resident assistant at the school believes it would make a difference.
"I think that the paper would have an influence over the opinions of the students at Maryland," he said. "Most students live on campus, it’s like we're living in a bubble and the majority of my weekly news comes from the Diamondback."
Whether or not the polls hold true, this election certainly will be remembered for the enthusiasm and turnout of college students on both sides of the spectrum.
“Sure, the majority of college students WILL vote for Barack Obama tomorrow,” Gugliotta said. “But it is important that students know it is not just a one horse race.”
